An update from the 2nd Board of Nursing meeting on 5/6/10

Posted almost 14 years ago by Elaine Crain

Colleagues:

The 2nd BoN meeting went very differently from the 1st – a much more spirited discussion and a lot of differing opinions!

The Board of Physicians sent a representative asking if we would state, in the rewritten regulations, that a notification would be sent/given to all patients saying that there is no collaborative agreement. We were very polite (as she is a very nice person and likes NPs) and went on. Do I need to say we did NOT add this in J

We did, however, go through all the suggestions and changes made to the regulations, relying heavily on the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education, July 7, 2008, completed through the work of the APRN Consensus Work Group & the National Council of State Boards of Nursing APRN Advisory Committee and AANP’s Standards of Practice for Nurse Practitioners, revised 1998, 2002, 2006, 2007. Check these out if you haven’t already.

We also are using several Practice Acts from different states to see if someone does things better.

We added 2 definitions:

1. Attestation is a statement of intent

2. Collaboration is a cooperative relationship with other health care providers

So, we may be done. A draft will be sent to the group and we will have another look.

Next week we will take on the application process (a 2-page form you filled out and sent when you 1st became an NP) and the actual 'attestation' that everyone is talking about. We are envisioning a simple 2-statement one-page letter that you will send in to the BoN when you renew your license and/or if your doc is no longer practicing in Maryland.

In other news, the Board will be changing license renewal to every 2 years starting in 2011

Next meeting is Wednesday, May 12 at 4pm.

- Elaine
