From the desk of Shirley A. Devaris, RN, JD Director of Legislation Maryland Board of Nursing: PDMP training video

Posted over 6 years ago by Elaine Crain

The Behavioral Health Administration (BHA) is pleased to roll out a new training video to help Maryland State medical professionals gain insight into the uses and benefits of the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP).

The seven-and-a-half minute video—produced by Maryland Public Television and featuring two Maryland doctors—describes what information can be found in the PDMP, and how this information can serve as an effective tool when prescribing medication or when formulating a treatment plan for patients. The video also outlines key deadlines and steps for registering and using the PDMP.

By law, all prescribers and pharmacists in Maryland were required to register to use the PDMP by July 1, 2017. The law also mandates that by July 1, 2018 all prescribers must check the PDMP before prescribing a new course of treatment with opioids or other controlled substances AND at least every 90 days thereafter if treatment continues to include CDS drugs. Prescribers must also document PDMP data query and review in the patient’s medical record.

The July 1, 2018 date also requires Pharmacists to query and review patient PDMP data prior to dispensing ANY CDS drug if they have a reasonable belief that a patient is seeking the drug for any purpose other than the treatment of an existing medical condition.

To assist us in getting the word out regarding the PDMP and its benefits, we ask that you please share this training video on your website, and through email communications and social media.
