Dr. Sandra “Sam” Cotton is a Clinical Associate Professor at WVU and an adult nurse practitioner in a university internal medicine practice and a local free clinic for nearly 25 years. A retired Lieutenant Colonel, Chief Nurse Executive, and examiner flight nurse with the West Virginia Air National Guard, Sam is a 34+ year veteran of the United States Air Force; has served in Gulf Wars I and II, including two tours with the 379thand 332ndAeromedical Evacuation Squadrons in Balad, Iraq, as a Commander and Senior Flight Nurse, flying and caring for wounded troops in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Germany.

 

Her WVU service is focused on Health Policy and Mental Health Care for Veterans and their Families. She currently is an executive member of WVU President’s Action Group for Veterans, serves on the board of Operation Welcome Home, and is a member of the National Advisory Council: Have You Ever Served in the Military? for the American Academy of Nursing. In January, she began a postgraduate Veteran and Military Health Care Certificate program at the University of Colorado, Denver, Anschutz Medical Campus.
