The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 stipulates all DEA-registered practitioners compete an eight-hour training requirement.
Beginning on June 27, 2023, the Act requires all new and renewing DEA applicants to testify that they have completed 8 CE hours on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
- The training does not have to occur in one session.
- This is a one-time training requirement affirmation.
- There are a couple of exceptions, so read the DEA's letter if you are a specialty provider or a new graduate.
MAAPC has anticipated these changes and has been offering presentations at webinars and conferences that meet these requirements. To see a complete list – visit our website
MAAPC is offering 6 CE credits this fall that meet this requirement, as well as Maryland’s 2018 requirement for applicants registering for new or renewing CDS registration (Safe Prescribing of Opioids).

* Beginning April 1, 2022, when you apply for a Maryland health occupation license or complete your renewal application, you will be required to attest that you have completed an approved implicit bias training course. This applies to all “health care professionals” (physician, nurse, dentist, social worker, psychologist, pharmacist, health educator, or other allied health professional). You are NOT required to submit a certificate of completion for this training to your Board and Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are NOT required. We are offering proof of registration and a certificate of completion in case you need verification of completion.
