The Maryland Academy of Advanced Practice Clinicians (MAAPC) is proud to announce the
establishment of The Future Nightingales Endowed Scholarship in support of associate
degree nursing (ADN) students enrolled at the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) with
demonstrated financial need. MAAPC Board of Directors celebrated with CSM President Dr.
Yolanda Wilson, CSM Foundation members, nursing faculty and staff at a ceremony on
October 1, 2025, held in the MAAPC Nursing Lab at The Center for Health Sciences Building at
the CSM Hughesville campus. MAAPC gifted an endowment of $57,500 which will award two
$1,250 scholarships to deserving nursing students each year. This initiative holds special
meaning, honoring the organization’s founding leaders, many of whom launched their
nursing careers from the region and includes CSM nursing alumni Board members Lorraine
Diana, Kelli Goldsborough, and Paula Jo Carson.
MAAPC named this nursing scholarship after Florence Nightingale, whose story represents
perseverance against societal barriers and inspires recipients to overcome obstacles. By
focusing on compassionate care and human dignity, embracing scientific rigor and lifelong
learning, having environmental awareness and holistic perspectives, and demonstrating
moral courage and advocacy, scholarship recipients will continue Florence Nightingale's
mission of elevating the nursing profession through excellence and commitment to
professional growth.
MAAPC recognizes that investing in nursing education through scholarships creates cascading
benefits that extend far beyond individual recipients. Research consistently shows that
nursing education provides one of the most reliable pathways out of poverty, offering stable
employment, competitive wages, and meaningful work that strengthens entire communities.
CSM is based in Southern Maryland's Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's Counties. MAAPC chose
CSM for its community focus of increasing the number and diversity of registered nurses
entering the workforce, improving health equity and addressing healthcare shortages in
regions and communities with the greatest need. By supporting students from these very
communities, MAAPC is building a workforce pipeline that will serve families, neighbors, and
future generations.
MAAPC recognizes that today's associate degree nursing students represent the foundation of
tomorrow's healthcare workforce and potential future advanced practice clinicians who will
continue MAAPC's mission of expanding healthcare access and improving patient outcomes
throughout Maryland. By establishing this scholarship, MAAPC honors its roots in Southern
Maryland while investing in the next generation of nursing professionals.
